Just finished up a remarkable time @ the O'Neill - Wendy Goldberg is running THE place for new developmental workshops. (it didn't hurt that the Scissor Sisters were there working on a new musical). Amazing artists, delightful view and a little bar that knows what it's doing = total adult theater camp. It also may have been the fact that i was working on a stunning new play - FIREWORK by Lauren Gunderson - it's a sexy/funny/political three-hander (programming gold).

Fun fact - I have known Lauren Gunderson since she was in high school, coming to Dad's Garage as a young lass. I even saw her perform as the lead role in "The Snow Queen" for Onstage Atlanta when she was in 11th grade - ah, our little Lauren is all grown up now, and luckily I have stayed the exact same age.

We were outside, and during our opening night, there was a giant drunken beach frat party AND the special needs camp next door was playing TAPS - as you might guess, our sound designer, Ryan "i'm lying' Rumery, had what looked like cardiac arrest, but I think it made the audience listen even harder....a little us vs. them never hurts a piece of theater.

A pretty great time.

So, I have been remiss in posting about one of my favorite theatrical experiences ever. BRINK! Written by Greg Kotis, Deborah Stein, Peter Nachtrieb, Deb Laufer, Lydia Diamon and Kristoffer Diaz.

I have long been obsessed with rights of passage, and what does that mean in today’s American culture. I’m also curious about rights of passage thru time – what did it mean to finally be a man in Mesopotamia? Did you get some new exciting spices? So, I tossed that prompt out to our writers and they ran with it….and created one of the most endearing and charming pieces I’ve gotten to work on.

I think probably the best thing to come out of it was getting to know that these writers are really my people – we preach a lot about how, as artists, you are supposed to find “your people” – and as a director, you’re always trying to find playwrights who you share a common language with What was really great about this, is by the end of this, I totally felt like all six of these writers were my people.

Granted, they are all very twisted, and I wouldn’t trust them around children. But I would have a hell of a lot of fun making shows with them.

Friday: Davids guitar went down at the end of Act One during Thunder Road - during
intermission Paul Doyle actually took his guitar apart and sautered parts of it then put it back together to be ready by the start of Act Two. Rather impressive.

Saturday: My parents came, which was incredibly sweet as the Parkinson's monologue is my Dad. And true to form, at the end of the show, he was the first person to stand up and start dancing. He said he was tempted to toss his cane on stage!

Anthology: The Beginning

Last week we had our Anthology playwrights in town. And, I would say this even if didn’t know that Peter read this blog, that it was truly one of the more delightful workshop weekends I have ever been a part of.

Perhaps it was subconscious, but in choosing the playwright, I really pushed for people that had come up doing small theater.

Scrappy, collaborative theater. The kind I like. And the mix worked brilliantly. Greg Kotis and Kristopher Diaz worked together to create a 10 minute musical about cologne and rejection – Peter Nachtrieb and Deborah Stein are working on a dream ballet - what more could a director want?

In my hopes to create an ensemble of writers to write for our ensemble of actors and create an actor-driven piece of theater, I couldn’t be happier – I feel like we’re not only make a piece of theater, we have the potential to make a really strong piece of theater.

And I know I get accused of being excitable – but I can’t actually remember a time that I was so excited about the three shows I have coming up. If my excitement was dollars, this economy would be fine. Until I had a few too many drinks, got sick and then the bubble burst. Oh, wait, maybe my excitement is the economy.

Rock and Roll hits Chicago

We did the workshop of our Rock and Roll show this weekend – it was a blast, very inspiring, and a little bit of the old school.

One of the things I’ve been trying to figure out at ATL, is can that “small theater, bunch of people putting on a show theater brilliance vibe” live in a large regional institution. Can you create work in the room, full of risk, that’s about the people in the show? Can you really create collaborative work – or does collaboration in a regional theater sense mean the lighting designer and the sound designer share the space above the stage? With both this show and the anthology, I feel like we’re going the small theater route – putting together a great team, building excitement and making sure we write down our best ideas on bar napkins.

So, we did a reading of the show – with a band – the actors volunteered their time, came in and read it cold. The band practiced for 30 minutes and then was good to go. This was old old school. Brian Lilllienthal drove six hours, played in the band, drank at the Green Mill, slept on a floor and then drove back – allright, we’re actually so old school, we’re back in college.

But it was rather inspiring. Walking up the stairs at DePaul, I could see theater students – who were trying to work on breathing exercises – wondering why “London Calling” was playing above them. I wonder if it’s easier or harder to breather to the Clash?

I spent Sunday afternoon with my good friends Sean and Noelle – two of my favorite people - they have a young son Jack, who is 4 months old and having a tough time, after going thru several surgeries, still needs a major liver transplant. It’s almost impossible to spend time in a situation like that and not be amazingly clear about what’s actually important in the world. As I left them and went to our reading – I couldn’t help but be thankful for all these people that had made so many sacrifices to help us do our little skit. I even got a little teary at the end, as we told our sweeter stories and the band played Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” to bring the show home.

For today, the little theater vibe reigns supreme. Of course, as I finish typing this, I’m late for a meeting – so we’ll see how the rest of the day goes.

PS - on the way we stopped at the most amazing dinner shack in Indiana. 'Nuff said.

Just finished up my director's notes for Christmas Carol

One of the first things I ever noticed about Christmas Carol was what a nice man Jacob Marley is.

No seriously.

He’s doomed to walk the earth forever. No chance of redemption. And yet, he still goes out of his way to try to convince his old ally to do better. He comes back as a ghost (which I can’t imagine is easy), gets three other associates together (I have to think magical spirits are busy, and on Christmas Eve this was a scheduling nightmare), and works to help out his friend. How many buddies do you have like that?

For me, this will equally be a play about reuniting old friends. I met David Keeton in the fall of 1992, and 3 years later we founded Dad’s Garage Theater. In 1996 I met Trent Blanton, and together, Dave, Trent and I worked on what would be the first show to put Dad's on the map. It turned out to be the show that launched all of our careers. As foolish, headstrong men we worked great together for a few years and then split up – I went off to a director career, Trent went on to tour with Les Mis for 10 years, and Dave went on to play music in Vegas and around the world – until now. This year’s Carol brings us back together for the first time. Same roles, just perhaps a year or two (or fifteen) older and wiser, but still with a decent amount of foolish headstrong rebellion under our belts.

They are good friends of mine, artists I deeply admire, but mainly, the reason I'm most excited to have them here: I trust that any of us would come back from the dead to warn the others.

So, the run continues - and one of the great things about the show is how each day events change the context of it.

There's a pig in it for no actual reason (except that it makes me laugh), but when the whole scandal of "did Obama call Palin a pig with lipstick" - suddenly it got huge laughs. Now when Wilson says "I created the system that regulates our banks", the audience boos - so Nick added in "I tried", which is a huge laugh line now. Crazy.

And for those of you that know Ted Rosky (former board member), you'll love this review that quotes him.

“One of the most amusing parts of the evening occurred during intermission. A gentleman seated several rows down from me stood up and announced (as was written in the program) that the 43rd skit was to be followed by a 44th, determined by the audience. Based on the volume of our applause, we were going to elect to see either a skit about Barack Obama as our next President or one with John McCain in the role. "In all the times this play has been performed," the gentleman said, "the audience vote has always been for Obama. But tonight, the author of the other skit is in the audience, so let's get to see it for a change by giving a rousing round of applause for that son-of-a-bitch McCain!" [As I understand it, playwright Andrew Bayiates was indeed in the audience, but it was his wife who had actually penned the McCain skit.] As it happened, the majority could not in good conscience vote for McCain no matter what the circumstances, so we saw the Obama skit. It consisted of Obama (Cassie Beck) jumping rope while two other actors turned the rope and recited rhymes about Obama's life and about the challenges facing him. They turned faster and faster, first one rope and then two ropes turning in opposite directions which Beck was required to jump Double Dutch style. And the President was thoroughly up to the task.”

43 Plays for 43 Presidents’

In its season follow-up to “Glengarry Glen Ross,” Actors Theatre jumps on the political bandwagon, but on a much lighter, satirical note. “43 Plays for 43 Presidents” is just that — 43 two-minute skits on each American president, from George W. to George Dubya — by a five-member cast that includes Gregory and Abigail Bailey Maupin, who you may know from the Le Petomane Theatre Ensemble. As a bonus, each night the audience votes on President No. 44, and a prepared Obama or McCain skit follows, based on popular vote, of course.

Director Sean Daniels says the skits have a wide range — from a musical to a puppet show to complete silence (James Polk?). “It’s a funny, satirical take on American history, up to the present,” he says. “Basically the audience takes a look at the past, and then gets a chance to figure out the next step.” Put on the spot, Daniels admits he has a sweet spot for Jimmy Carter. “When I directed this play in Atlanta, we actually got Carter to come to a performance,” he says. “Instead of hiding out in a ‘safe room’ we made in the back, he stayed during intermission and shook everyone’s hands.” —Sara Havens

A few pics from week one. Or really from the moments following rehearsal each day during week one.

It was Mister Munoz b-day, so we surprised him with a little cake (expertly cooked by his lady friend), and then he surprised us, by ordering a giant set of ribs that only a birthday boy could finish.

The play is harder than I remember it, or maybe just my standards are different - the great thing about the play is that one scene is a jug band and the next is a puppet show - which now means we have to teach Nick to play banjo (which he was brilliant in 30 minutes) and Aaron puppetry (which he was brilliant in 30 minutes) - so it's as though we're learning 43 completely different plays....luckily we have the rockstar cast of all rockstar casts....and we haven't even brought in our top secret guest choreographer....tomorrow we stage the Nixon musical - get ready for a jazz hand or three.

So, we are about to start the new season.

In all of my years of directing, I have never directed the same show twice, and this season is starting off with me doing it twice – 43 Plays for 43 Presidents and Christmas Carol, so we’ll see how that goes.

The Presidents show is one of my all time favorite shows, we did it in Atlanta and Jimmy Carter came to see it right after he won the Nobel Prize. Never have their been more automatic weapons in Dad’s Garage than that night. He was such a champ, we couldn’t tell anyone he was coming that night, so the audience was stunned that they had come on the same night as a former President. We had to set up a room for him in the back for intermission, but when it happened, he just turned and walked into the crowd and shook everyone’s hand. He nailed all the presidential trivia in the show, and laughed during the Reagan “guns for hostages” dance. That really seemed to tickle the secret service guys.

For this round, they are writing new plays for Obama and McCain – and whomever the audience picks, we do t hat piece that night. Should be good times.

For Carol – we are making it the most Carolly of Christmas Carol. My friend Trent who used to be on Les Mis tour for 10 years, and played Javert when the show was in Louisville is coming in as Mr. Fezziwig, and my dear dear friend David Keeton is coming in as a music director. Dave founded Dad’s Garage with me, and Trent was the lead in Cannibal: The Musical (the south park musical) when we did it, um, 10 years ago. So, we’re getting a little old school (and by old, I mean old) on Christmas Carol.

So, I’ve attended two of the big races of the middle of the country – and strangely had very similar seats for both.

The Kentucky Derby – where I accidentally said the wrong thing while placing my bet – which led to me having a giant payday - I still would have won if I had said what I meant to say – but luckily my mistake put me over the top. They actually take your ID into some kind of booth where the IRS confirms your SS# - really? They can do that at the Derby? So, I am now considered a professional gambler, and will have to file as such on my taxes. Best bit of advice I got all day was from Masterson, who after I won big told me to stick it in my pocket and not tell anyone. Wise.

Next up, The Indy 500 – which is Jim Neighbors plus Florence Henderson plus 500,000 people which equals = America. It’s pretty impressive – though I’m pretty sure that no one in Indiana wears shirts. We saw about 6 cars “touch” the wall – which at 215 miles and hour means that your car is now totaled. Best bit of advice I got all day there was from Callahan, who as my Ziploc bag of Bourbon broke, quickly suggested we all chug Gatorade so we could use the Gatorade bottle to hold the precious bourbon. Tech guys think of everything.

On the work front, I directed a reading of Steve Yockey’s BELLWEATHER at the Public Theater in New York – where Emily Ackerman and Oliver Wadsworth stole the show – we’re looking for the next theater to workshop it – so fingers crossed.

Off to Denver next week for the TCG Conference – there’s a “young person event” at a “trendy venue” with the added note “no ties” on Wednesday night. When will theater people learn to not use words like trendy, or hip unless you actually talk like that – think of the last legit person you know who said “do you guys wanna go to a trendy spot tonight” and seriously, every cool person I know under 35 seems to be wearing ties these days. Oh, theater, when will you learn.

Though it makes me laugh, as when I was bemoaning the state of younger audience marketing – I received this email from my wife who had gotten the same email:

“when oh when will people understand that if you want to attract the type of people you want to attract, you MUST stop saying things like “come hang out at a trendy venue” ??

ugh.”

We may just be old and crotchety. Then again next year I won’t be aloud to the 35 and under party, so perhaps I should just go quietly and eat as much appetizers as possible.

One Of The Judge's Take On This Past Weekend's Iron Bartender Competition

So, I may have had one of the most awkward moments of my life two days ago – which for me is pretty awkward.

I had a doctor’s appointment to get my annual “man work” taken care of. And of course, I always get really nervous when I have to change in the dressing room while the doctors away, as I fear them returning too soon (Emily Ruddock suggested I keep one foot on the door, I hadn’t thought of that), so as soon as they say “I’ll be right back”, I race to get everything on or off.

So, on Tuesday, I took off my shirt and zip-up jacket at the same time, and at the end of it, I put them on at the same time. Then I chatted with the doctor for a few moments…and reached down and felt something that felt like a giant cravat on my neck – I was wearing my shirt backwards and my doctor hadn’t commented on it, and she can’t just think this is a style choice, as she saw me come in. To make things even worse, I didn’t comment on it, I just waited until she was writing things down, and quickly tried to turn my shirt around – she was kind enough to keep writing the whole time. I quickly tried to wrap up the rest of the conversation and go home. Oh god.

Awkward.

So we are at opening (for what feels like the 4th time). We’ve spent the last 11 days making some great tweaks to the show (acting and script-wise). It really feels like Gordo 2.0, essentially the same show, with some new added features. We’ll see how people respond in Cleveland, where much more traditional fair usually plays (right before us was Pride and Prejudice, right after us is the Glass Menagerie). I have faith it’ll find it’s audience. Last night there were 6 people, who appeared to be under 30, and they went crazy for it, and that seemed to allow the rest of the audience to relax and enjoy it go (our first night getting scene applause after every scene). So, we’ll see.

The staff at the Playhouse has been awesome. The production staff built us new walls instantly, the bar kept the kitchen open each night so the actors could eat, and everyone has seemed delighted to have us here.

Best Burger: Old Angle in West Cleveland. Apparently the rust belt (as the locals call it) is famous for it’s hamburgers, after much debate with my cast, and much sampling, we’ve declared it the best. Though while we were there, this man (who we named: meat with eyes) just kept staring at Tracy. Weird. So, we faked taking a picture of the boys so we could capture him in all his mustache glory.

Best purchase so far: Fro $2.50 I purchased an old-school game of Battleship (as in “you sunk my battleship”), and since we couldn’t find any open bars, created the game of Beer Battleship, where you take a drink for each hit. If it sounds like the worlds most ludicrous-college-seriously-how-old-are-you-game, you’re correct. And Matt Dellapina and me are unstoppable at it.

Also, in more shocking news, we attempted to go see LeBron James play in the playoffs – we braced ourselves for the high ticket price and legions of scalpers ready to jack up the price – until we found out: the game wasn’t sold out. Whoa. Cleveland Cavalier fans are the new Atlanta Brave fans: call me when we get to the second round.

Also, in a strange 1984-esque turn, while the visiting team is shooting free-throws, the Cavs management flashes images of things that the audience hates: The Red Sox, The Yankess, John Elway, The Pittsburgh Steelers – it was pretty insane, I think the idea is that the fans seem to hate almost everything, we kept waiting to see pictures of: trans fat, recycling, John Kerry, or babies to show up on the jumbotron.

So, a few hours till opening….

A few pics so far. Callahan and I drove Bob here, teched for one day, and then were treated with a day off - so of course we took in a little Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (did you know the Doors put out an album after Jim Morrison died entitled "other voices", oh that's sweet, and sad), and then went to see Matt's beloved Red Sox play the Indians. It was less than 40 degrees, so we turned to our friend scotch to keep us warm. So, I essentially took a week long nap after Humana. Though I did co-host my wife's dj show, take the dog to the beach, and go in search of the "greatest sandwich of 2007". Here's a good one: For unknown reasons in 2007, Rolin Jones (fan of Humana, and current writer on Weeds) was lost in Oakland when he discovered a tiny place that only sells two kind of sandwiches, fried chicken and egg. He got the fried chicken, he ate it and dubbed it the greatest sandwich of 07. Over drinks last week, when he heard I was going to the Bay Area, he promised me that if I did not also agree, he would refund the price of my sandwich. So, of course we tracked it down - I ate the fried chicken, my vegetarian wife had the egg. There will be no need for a refund. We're still talking about it.

After the last show this past Sunday, the Actors Associates made the actors "rabbit stew." Gotta love those Associates.

In other news, for an outside theater, I was supposed to direct the world premiere of a new play from Sam Bobbrick, who created a little show called SAVED BY THE BELL....until during auditions an actor came in with this show on his resume. Turns out it wasn't new at all, it was done 35 years ago and this actor starred in it - since no one had produced it in 35 years, Sam figured he could pass it off as new and no one would notice, and since this theater seems to have not discovered Google yet, they almost didn't....oh Sam.....I'm so excited, I'm so excited, I'm so scared.....so, the play got pulled and nothing is going to be in it's place, so I spent two days in Chicago casting a show that isn't happening. I'm trying to pretend I'm just a jet-setter and just flew to Chicago to have dinner with my friend Joy.

Review: 'Gordo' is a refreshing breeze

It's a name to remember.

The 24-year-old New York playwright has made a precocious debut with her warm and hopeful comedy, "All Hail Hurricane Gordo," at the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

The play premiered Saturday at Actors Theatre of Louisville and will continue at various times through the end of the month.

The title refers to a 20-something, emotionally damaged character named Gordo. He rams into walls, wrestles his older brother, Chaz, and can't hold a job. He's also exuberant, creative, and painfully needy. He wears pajamas and calls himself "a force of nature."

It's Mensch who is a force of nature. Her tidily crafted, two-act play (energetically directed by Actors' associate director Sean Daniels) involves four well-drawn, very different characters.

Within this mostly light-hearted play about change and maturity, she weaves threads of mystery and serious issues of family responsibility. Daniels and his charming cast do a fine job delivering Mensch's likable, uncomplicated (but not simplistic) work about two brothers stuck in a rut of dependency.

On Paul Owen's set in the Pamela Brown Auditorium, a clutter of clothes and papers look as if they've been swept by a strong wind underneath a faded vinyl couch that's been repaired with duct tape.

Nearby, Chaz (Matthew Dellapina) types letters on a desk stacked with phone books. On the other side of the room, a rickety card table with an umbrella as a fourth leg holds an odd assortment of things, including comic books, a bingo set and swimming goggles. You might say they are artifacts of an arrested childhood.

They belong to Gordo (Patrick James Lynch), whose tenuous mental health make him dependent on the well-meaning Chaz, who does his best to hold their household together.

The force of change comes in the form of a spirited young woman named India (Tracee Chimo), who rents a room from the brothers. Her presence and the later arrival of her father (William McNulty) force Gordo to grow up and allow Chaz to imagine options and make choices.

Mensch, whose surname in Yiddish means a person of integrity and compassion, has endowed her brothers with those very characteristics. And like Chaz and Gordo, Mensch's future is promising.

At a time when the world seems overwhelmingly troubled, "All Hail Hurricane Gordo" blows into the Humana Festival with a confident and idealistic new voice in American theater.

So, we open in 2 hours. We worked in a new ending last night, and it totally unlocked act two for us. Instead of people looking at us strangely (1st preview), they lept to their feet. Nice. Nothing like some last minute humana-heroics to keep everyone on their toes. On opening night I truly become crushingly awkward, so I just try to have a few drinks and avoid people. We’ll see how that works. So, here we go….

So, we are done in the rehearsal room and move into tech on Tuesday. The cast got the sweetest email from our stage manager Pablo today in which he included “Seriously, thanks for one of the best rehearsal periods...ever. It has been such a pleasure and I can’t wait to hit the stage.” Everyone left very pumped. It was a fierce week (to channel my inner Christian – project runway not beautiful city) ending with 3 strong runs. Masterson came by to watch a few of the runs, make some suggestions and use our ratty couch first hand.

Next up, adding a few songs, some lights, and a big pumpkin and avocado 1978 set.

We’re three days in – and although I’m a bit brain dead, I couldn’t be more delighted with everything.

Oh, and also we’ve all self diagnosed ourselves with Aspergers. Seriously I think we have it.

It’s one of those shows where we spend as much time laughing and breaking (ala Harvey Korman) as working,

Today we worked on the scene where Gordo wrestles his brother to the ground while wearing a football helmet. Comedy gold.

We spent a good hour with our fight director Lee on the finer points of ramming someone with a helmet. Lee knew exactly how to do it, and how to do it over and over again - perhaps a sign that he has aspergers also? I totally bet he does.

Newest cast member added, snickers will be playing the role of Bob, word is he's brilliant - also, the one picture that will be on our set wall. It's of our sound designer Matt Callahan and his brother Brian. They would pretend to be newspaper reporters and after a hard day go in the kitchen and have shots of water. Ah, the irish.

If anyone has GREAT same sex sibling stories, I'd love to collect them - one time my brother actually tackled me with a football helmet (just like in the play). I got it off of him and threw it back - of course he moved out of the way and it went into the wall, leaving a rather expensive dent. My brother retaliated by filling up a squirt gun with urine and spraying me. I responded by locking him out of the house - as the story goes, it was the first time my parents had been out to lunch and feeling like our move to Florida wasn't so traumatic on the family. They came home to one brother locked out, one covered in urine and a giant whole in our wall. This was why we couldn't have nice things. Got other great same sex sibling stories we can use for the show?

Pittsburgh loves us, and I may be fired

So, we had the most delightful workshop in Pittsburgh – apparently we give off some kind of pheromone, as the city seemed to be hitting us on the whole time. The first night some 20 year old waiter bought Julie and I drinks and tried to “chat her up”. I gladly took my free drink and nodded.

Two nights later a drunk girl in a bar actually tried to entice Matt D with the “I’m throwing a fishing line to you”, when that didn’t work she started to spank herself, and when that didn’t work she tried to “drop it like it’s hot” at which point she fell over and her friends had to help her away – maybe she was really just drunk, or maybe that’s the power of excitement our cast holds over the people of Pittsburgh.

Oh, right the play! Carly did smart good work on it – shorter, tighter, and started adjusting things to the actual actors that would be doing the play.

Also, on the set front, we’ve gone thru couple of colors on the back wall and have settled on a wonderful burnt orange – the idea is that the house was gorgeous in 1978 when they moved in – and from that moment, has only had things removed from it.

We were at the City Theater in Pittsburgh – which is Masterson’s old theater – and it’s just complete coincidence that we were there as our actor Matt was in a show (13th of Paris). Marc had hinted there somewhere in the building there was a picture of him with a serious mustache – we spent our time looking – and low and behold, there it was – in all it’s glory. Masterson and the circa 1980 stash. I’m sure that had he joined our mustached competition for Hedwig, he would have taken us and would have the “fireman ready” trophy that Bing Putney now holds.

We're Cast!!!

So, after seeing TONS of people, we are cast. And we could not have a more stellar cast at that – people who can bring the funny. That and we have the charm of having a 24-year-old playwright – and Bill McNulty, who has been acting up a storm at Actors Theater for about that period of time.

Also, I’m sure this story will get told again and again, but Carly got into theater because of the Civilians – they asked her to dramaturg a show, and then came to a keg party she was throwing, she was smitten by them and their work and so dove into theater – and now she’s sharing the Mainstage with them (coincidence?). Ah, keg parties, they really are the starting point for the American cultural conversation.

I tried to find pictures of all the actors, and could – with the exception of Patrick James Lynch, who is playing Gordo for us – so I just included what comes up on Google search when you put his name in. It’s a man named Patrick Lynch, who is a certified ghost hunter – AWESOME!!! Besides that, we have Matt Dellapina playing Chaz (who in his other life is a civilian – coincidence?) and Tracee Chimo as India.

Oh, what a delight they’ll be. Next up is seeing if we can workshop the show in Pittsburgh – why Pittsburgh you ask? Well besides the obvious that everyone wants to be in Pittsburgh in early Feb – Matt is doing a world premiere show by Mat Smart at the City Theater (Masterson’s old theater – coincidence?), so we’re taking the show/workshop to him.

We’ll pack warmly – don’t worry.

Two of my favorite people got engaged this morning. Scott, who was our guitar player on Hedwig, and the ever delightful Lisa. Today was her birthday, so he started it off by proposing and then ended it with throwing a giant party for her. Awwww. Seriously awww.

Apparently in Louis ville - in September everyone dresses up like zombies and walk the streets - even shop owners come out to yell at the zombies. One of my first time meeting the two of them was when they were coming back from eating brains. Awwwwww.

It's a little known fact that I have been in one movie. I played Orville Wright - opposite Ty Pennington. We were brilliant. We were on for a total of 60 seconds. I think my back is to the camera for the majority of it - but my back was brilliant. The film has since gone on to be a "family favorite" and recently HBO showed it in 5 countries.

Last night I met with my intern, Dav Yendler, a nice russian boy who was recommended to me by Adam Greenfield – who said “if he doesn’t work out for you, I’ll buy you a bottle of tequila”. That may be the greatest recommendation I’ve ever heard, so I took him. Last night we met and chatted about “the first semester” and had a few drinks (read: 6). At the end of the evening, I was heading home, as I am old – and he, Jessica, and Chris S. decided that they were going to have an adventure and drive, perhaps to Cincinnati, perhaps just 30 minutes and turn around. As I got home, I got a call from them, saying there were at a Wendy’s in some random town in Kentucky, and did I want anything. I joked that I wanted a small frosty, and then went to bed, not thinking about it.

When I left this morning to come to rehearsal, there was a small frosty sitting in front of my door.

Luckily it’s Kentucky in the winter, so it was still intact.

Charming these children are. Charming.

Operation Project Brother

So, we had our first production meeting for my Humana show – which since we can’t name yet (the titles are released on Dec. 15th) has been code named “Project Brother” by the ever charming Mark Walston.

Funny bit of chatter that came out of it. All the designers were telling stories about growing up with their sibilings – Deb Sullivan actually did the "Brady Brunch putting tape in the middle of the room" to separate her and her sisters space – Callahan and his brother when they were 5 and 8, used to pretend to be newspaper reporters and then go sit in the kitchen, shoot water and talk about how tough the day had been – and I told the story of how my brother once filled a squirt gun with urine to shoot me, after which I threw a football helmet at him, putting a large whole in the wall. Apparently when it comes to sibiling stories to fuel this show – we got them in spades.

Turkey Day, Opening and Errant Jason Campbell passes

So, a few things to catch up. We had a vegetarian thanksgiving – with the exception of the giant turkey that Matt Callahan brought, and his potatoes – apparently it’s his people’s thing (the potatoes, not the turkey), and he could have veggie hands all over it. We had over the guest artists from out of town, and our delightfully sassy Lighting Designer Deb Sullivan. I heart Deb Sullivan. My wife was the lead Turkey Day lady (even though she doesn't actually eat turkey), and we all owe it to her. Huzzah wife huzzah.

The next day was opening – which was a true delight. I couldn’t be prouder of the show – a few of the veterans and staff members pulled me aside to tell me it was their favorite Christmas Carol since they got here. Which was sweet. And then they bough me drinks – which was sweeter. But really, the show is what it is because we have such a cracker-jack team working on the show – and such amazing actors from the company – Bill McNulty and Fred Major are my new dream actors. In fact, I’m trying to create some kind of puppet show with Fred Major as the disgruntled neighbor. Seriously, I’ve spent time on this. Pablo got me a giant amount of gum. A GIANT amount of gum. I may have a problem.

Then the next day I flew to Tampa, so that my dad and I could watch the Redskins throw an interception at the end of the game to lose it. Oh, Redskins. You sorta loveable over-priced loser. I loves ya.

The fascinating part of hanging out with my parents, playing some cards, and having a few drinks - is the true nature of the name Daniels. Rumor has it, that's not actually our real last name - it's Edwards, but my great great grandfather was in a bar fight in Ireland, and thought he killed a man, so he fled to America and changed his name to Daniels to hide from police. Luckliy the man didn't die, but the name was set. Why did it take 34 years to hear this story? That's awesome.

Now, I’m in Tallahassee, Fl returning a favor to the Dean of the School of Theatre, doing some teaching, having drinks with my friend Dan Dietz who now teaches here, and then flying home.

It’s so strange – when I was here, I was a total punk, and now I’m pumping out advice and sitting in the Dean’s office (but not because I was underage drinking?!?). Still, it’s nice to be here, but tomorrow morning I’m off, flying back for a Humana Production meetings, and then on to New York to see a gabillion shows, and a do a little casting. No rest, wicked, you know.

2nd preview - wonderful/awful

During the intermission of the second preview - I had an inspiring and then humbling experience. A small child came up to ask me if I was the director, and if so, how could he get into acting, and even more importantly how could he get into Christmas Carol. He was probably 10. It was incredibly sweet. And just as I was feeling pretty good - the man in front of me turned around to ask if I could chew my gum quieter - after he was done, his son said "thank you". I told the cast the next day, and they laughed and laughed - and somewhere, they are still laughing.

For opening, Pablo bought me a ton of gum. Look out second to last row!

3 Days In - 4 To Go

So, after two days – we’ve cut over 200 cues, 7 rotations, and one fly from last year’s production. Tomorrow I still need to go in and fix one scene before we run it and see what we’ve put together over the weekend.

So, we started tech tonight – man the set is big – and one of the first things to do was to run Marley’s entrance three times to make sure the fog levels won’t kill our actor. The last time, we had David Hanbury play it as though Cher was cast as Marley. We learned that Cher would be a terrible Marley – and yet, simply what we must do next year.

My brain is slipping

So for the last three nights – I have had the same vivid recurring dream. I’m at rehearsal for my 3rd Christmas show at Actors Theater (granted, I don’t actually have a 3rd Christmas show, but it’s like one of those dreams you had when you were a kind, and you dreamed you went to school – only to wake up and actually have to go to school!). I can’t tell you exactly what the play is about, but there’s a lot of children, and a big race at the end of it – and Michael Domue is stage managing it, but for some reason he’s wearing a headset in the rehearsal hall as I try to work on the race with the kids. I think I might be losing it.

Also, after working magic (budget and actual magic), our costume shop is able to add new costumes to the show. After telling her how amazing I thought she was for making this work, I received the following email from my costume designer:
